The origin of "A Christmas Tree" for the Nation" goes back to 1913 and the lighting of "the Washington Community Christmas Tree." With great fanfare and pageantry, 20,000 observers crowded the East Plaza of the United States Capitol on Christmas Eve, 1913, to hear the United States Marine Corps Band and a chorus of one thousand, and view a presentation of The Nativity following illumination of the tree.
